Mongolia Travel Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, practical answers about Mongolia tours, visas, seasons, roads, ger camps, festivals, payments and planning a safe, memorable journey.

Plan your Mongolia tour with confidence

Mongolia is vast, seasonal and wonderfully different from an ordinary holiday destination. These answers cover the questions travellers most often ask our Mongolia-based team. Your final itinerary and quotation will always specify the exact services, travel times and accommodation arranged for your journey.

Planning Your Mongolia Trip

What is the best time of year to visit Mongolia?

June through September is the most popular period for Mongolia tours, with warmer weather, open ger camps and easier access to the countryside. May and October are quieter but cooler. Winter travel from November to March is ideal for travellers seeking snow landscapes, festivals and specialist expeditions, provided they are prepared for very low temperatures.

How many days do I need for a Mongolia tour?

Seven to ten days is enough for one main region such as the Gobi Desert or Central Mongolia. Around 12 to 16 days allows a more complete journey combining several regions. Western Mongolia, the taiga and other remote areas often require extra time because of domestic flights, road conditions and long distances.

Do I need a visa to travel to Mongolia?

Visa requirements depend on your nationality, passport and length of stay, and Mongolia periodically updates its visa-exemption rules. Check the latest requirements with the nearest Mongolian embassy, consulate or the official immigration authority before booking international flights. We can provide supporting tour documents when required.

Can Journey.mn design a private custom Mongolia itinerary?

Yes. We design private Mongolia tours around your dates, interests, preferred pace, accommodation standard and budget. Custom journeys can focus on photography, culture, wildlife, festivals, horse riding, family travel or remote expeditions, while keeping driving times and realistic local logistics in mind.

Are your Mongolia tours private or group departures?

We offer both private journeys and selected small-group departures. Private tours give you more flexibility over pace, stops and accommodation. Scheduled group tours follow fixed dates and itineraries and can be a good option for solo travellers or guests who enjoy travelling with others.

Booking and Payments

How do I book a tour with Journey.mn?

Send us an inquiry with your travel dates, number of travellers and interests. We will confirm availability, refine the itinerary and provide a written quotation. Your booking is confirmed after you accept the program and pay the required deposit through the payment method provided by our team.

How much deposit is required to confirm a booking?

A 30% deposit is normally required to confirm a Journey.mn booking. The remaining balance is due 60 days before the tour begins. Different terms may apply to last-minute bookings, domestic flights, festival tickets or services that suppliers require us to pay for immediately.

Can I pay for my Mongolia tour in instalments?

Instalment arrangements may be available between the initial deposit and the final balance deadline. Tell us your preferred payment schedule before confirming the booking, and we will advise what is possible for your itinerary and departure date.

What is normally included in the tour price?

Inclusions vary by itinerary but usually cover the accommodation, private or shared transport described in the program, an English-speaking guide, local drivers, listed meals, entrance fees and scheduled activities. Every quotation includes a clear list of included and excluded services.

What is usually not included in a Mongolia tour price?

International flights, travel insurance, visa costs, personal expenses, optional activities, alcoholic drinks, tips and services not listed in the confirmed itinerary are normally excluded. Domestic flights are included only when specifically stated in your quotation.

Transport and Roads

What are road conditions like in Mongolia?

Road conditions vary greatly. Main routes may be paved, while remote areas use gravel roads, steppe tracks and desert trails. Travel times can change because of weather, road works or river conditions. We plan realistic routes and use suitable vehicles and experienced local drivers.

How long are the driving days on Mongolia tours?

Some days involve short local drives, while transfers between remote regions can take four to seven hours or longer. Each itinerary is different, so we provide estimated driving times when planning your journey. Private tours can include photography, meal and landscape stops to make longer transfers more comfortable.

Are domestic flights in Mongolia reliable?

Domestic flights save considerable travel time, especially for Bayan-Ölgii, Khuvsgul and other distant regions. Schedules can be limited and may change for operational or weather reasons. We build sensible connections into the itinerary and discuss overland or timing alternatives when necessary.

Are airport transfers included?

Airport transfers are included when they are listed in your confirmed itinerary. For most full tour programs, our representative meets you at Chinggis Khaan International Airport and transfers you to your Ulaanbaatar hotel. Please provide your final flight details before arrival.

Accommodation and Meals

What accommodation is used on Mongolia tours?

Accommodation may include comfortable Ulaanbaatar hotels, countryside ger camps, family-run guesthouses, lodges and simple expedition accommodation. Standards vary significantly by region. Your proposal identifies the planned accommodation for each night so you know what to expect.

Do ger camps have private toilets and showers?

Standard ger camps commonly have shared toilet and shower blocks, while selected deluxe camps offer private en-suite facilities. In remote areas such as the taiga or deep countryside, facilities can be basic and showers may not be available every night. We explain the standard clearly before booking.

Are Mongolian gers heated at night?

Gers are generally heated by a wood- or coal-burning stove. Staff or hosts usually light the stove in the evening, but it may cool after the fire burns down. Winter expedition arrangements require warmer bedding, reliable heating procedures and realistic expectations about remote conditions.

Can you accommodate vegetarian or special dietary requirements?

Yes, with advance notice we can arrange vegetarian meals and accommodate many allergies or dietary needs. Options become more limited in remote regions, so please give us detailed requirements before the tour. Travellers with severe allergies should also carry appropriate medication and backup snacks.

Is safe drinking water provided during the tour?

We provide or arrange safe drinking water during touring days according to the confirmed program. To reduce single-use plastic, we recommend bringing a reusable bottle. In remote areas your guide will advise when water is bottled, filtered or boiled.

Activities and Experience

Can beginners ride horses or camels in Mongolia?

Yes. Many itineraries include short, beginner-friendly horse or Bactrian camel rides led by local handlers. Always tell your guide about your experience level and follow safety instructions. Longer riding expeditions require appropriate fitness, confidence and a separate assessment of riding ability.

When is the Naadam Festival in Mongolia?

The main national Naadam celebrations take place in Ulaanbaatar in July, with the principal opening ceremony traditionally held on July 11. Festival programs, ticket arrangements and regional Naadam dates can vary, so early booking is strongly recommended for hotels, guides and good viewing options.

When is the Golden Eagle Festival?

The best-known Golden Eagle Festival in Bayan-Ölgii is normally held in early October, while other eagle festivals and local events may take place on different dates. Flights and accommodation are limited during festival periods, so travellers should book well in advance and allow some flexibility for weather.

What can I see on a Gobi Desert tour?

A well-designed Gobi tour may include the Flaming Cliffs, Khongor Sand Dunes, Yol Valley, desert mountains, camel-herding families and remote ger camps. Longer routes can also include White Stupa and Baga Gazriin Chuluu. The best itinerary depends on your available days and preferred travel pace.

Can I visit the reindeer herders in northern Mongolia?

Yes, but visiting the Tsaatan reindeer herders is a genuine remote expedition rather than a simple sightseeing trip. Routes may involve long overland travel, horse riding, basic accommodation and rapidly changing weather. Access also depends on seasonal migration and respectful coordination with the community.

Do you offer photography tours in Mongolia?

Yes. Private photography journeys can be planned around landscapes, eagle hunters, nomadic life, festivals, wildlife, night skies and seasonal colour. We consider sunrise and sunset timing, access permissions, flexible stops and backup opportunities rather than treating the trip as a standard sightseeing itinerary.

Practical Travel Information

What should I pack for a Mongolia tour?

Bring layered clothing, a windproof and waterproof outer layer, comfortable footwear, sun protection, personal medication and a small daypack. Even in summer, mornings and nights can be cold. Winter journeys require expedition-level insulated clothing, boots, gloves and face protection; we provide a trip-specific packing list.

Will I have mobile signal and internet access?

Ulaanbaatar and provincial towns generally have mobile data and Wi-Fi, but coverage can be weak or unavailable in deserts, mountains and remote valleys. Treat connectivity outside towns as a convenience rather than a guarantee, and download important documents and maps before departure.

Can I use credit cards in Mongolia?

Cards are widely accepted at many hotels, restaurants and shops in Ulaanbaatar, but cash is important in rural areas. Mongolian tögrög is the local currency. Your guide can advise when to withdraw or exchange money before travelling to regions with limited banking facilities.

Do I need travel insurance for Mongolia?

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and may be required for remote or adventure tours. Your policy should cover medical treatment, evacuation, trip interruption and the activities in your itinerary, such as horse riding or motorcycling. Carry the insurer’s emergency contact details with you.

Is Mongolia suitable for families and older travellers?

Yes, when the itinerary is designed for the travellers’ ages, mobility and comfort needs. We can reduce long drives, arrange private transport and choose more comfortable accommodation where available. Children aged 12 and above are generally priced as adults; younger-child arrangements are quoted individually.
