The heart of the journey is a four-day horseback expedition to Kherkhluur Three Lakes, traveling with local horse guides through forests, river valleys, streams, wetlands and rugged mountain terrain. Far from roads, hotels and tourist camps, you will spend three nights camping in tents surrounded by pristine wilderness.
The adventure begins with the dramatic landscapes of Terelj National Park before heading deeper into the protected Khan Khentii region. From near Erdene, meet your horses and local wranglers and ride across Yudeg Pass toward the Tuul River before continuing into increasingly remote mountain country and reaching Kherkhluur Three Lakes.
A full day at the lakes allows time to explore, rest and photograph one of the least-visited landscapes in this part of Mongolia.
After returning from the wilderness, the journey continues through some of Central Mongolia’s most fascinating cultural and natural highlights. Experience traditional nomadic heritage, search for wild takhi (Przewalski’s horses) in Khustai National Park, explore the Elsen Tasarkhai sand dunes, and travel to historic Kharkhorin and Erdene Zuu Monastery.
This is not a conventional sightseeing tour. It is a genuine Mongolia wilderness experience designed for travelers who want to ride beyond the usual tourist routes, sleep beneath the open sky and experience the country’s landscapes from horseback.
The riding route has no permanent tourist accommodation. Trail conditions may include mud, streams, marshy ground, forest and mountain terrain, while riding times and routes may vary according to weather, river levels, trail conditions and horse welfare.
A reasonable level of fitness is recommended. Travelers should be comfortable spending several hours in the saddle and be prepared for changing mountain weather and genuine wilderness conditions.
