Welcome to Mongolia. Meet your guide at Chinggis Khaan International Airport and transfer to your hotel in central Ulaanbaatar. The remainder of the day is available to rest and prepare for the winter Gobi expedition. In the evening, meet your guide and fellow travelers for a welcome dinner and expedition briefing.

Today we travel south to Dalanzadgad, the gateway to Mongolia’s spectacular South Gobi. Whenever the domestic flight schedule allows, we will fly from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad, dramatically reducing travel time and allowing more time to experience the Gobi. If a suitable flight is unavailable, the journey will be arranged overland by private vehicle. Upon arrival in Dalanzadgad, transfer to your hotel and prepare for the coming days of winter exploration and the Thousand Camel Festival. The South Gobi in winter is remarkably peaceful. The crowds of summer are gone, the air is crisp and clear, and the enormous desert landscapes take on a raw and beautiful character.

After breakfast, travel into the Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park to explore Yolyn Am, one of the most dramatic natural attractions in southern Mongolia. Surrounded by the rugged mountains of the Gobi Altai, this narrow gorge is particularly impressive during winter, when sections of the valley can be covered with ice and snow. Walk into the gorge and experience the remarkable contrast between the frozen mountain landscape and the surrounding Gobi Desert. Later, visit a local camel-herding family and discover how nomadic families live through the harsh Gobi winter. Learn about Mongolia’s native two-humped Bactrian camels, traditional herding practices and the important role these remarkable animals have played in desert life for generations. This authentic family encounter provides the perfect introduction to the camel culture celebrated during the upcoming festival. Return to Dalanzadgad in the evening.

Today is one of the highlights of the journey as we attend Mongolia’s famous Thousand Camel Festival. Camel-herding families gather from across the South Gobi with their magnificent two-humped Bactrian camels to celebrate one of Mongolia’s most distinctive nomadic traditions. The festival is filled with color and energy. Herders arrive dressed in traditional Mongolian deels, while camels are decorated with handmade ornaments and traditional equipment. Depending on the official festival program, events may include ceremonial camel parades, traditional costume competitions, camel polo, herding demonstrations, cultural performances and other activities celebrating Gobi camel culture. Beyond the competitions, the festival provides a rare opportunity to meet camel herders from across the region and experience a living tradition that remains deeply connected to everyday life in the Gobi. Return to the Thousand Camel Festival for another exciting day of traditional competitions and celebrations. One of the most anticipated events is the camel race, where riders and their Bactrian camels compete across the open Gobi landscape. Other events highlight the relationship between herders and their animals, as well as the skills required for traditional camel husbandry. Spend time among local families, photographers, riders and herders while discovering camel-wool handicrafts, traditional clothing and elements of Gobi nomadic culture. Rather than simply watching a staged performance, travelers have the opportunity to experience a genuine regional gathering where local communities come together to celebrate and preserve their camel-herding heritage. Festival activities are subject to the official program and local weather conditions.

After two unforgettable days at the Thousand Camel Festival, continue through the South Gobi to Bayanzag, better known internationally as the Flaming Cliffs. The area became world-famous through important dinosaur discoveries made during the Central Asiatic Expeditions of the early twentieth century. Today, its towering red sandstone formations remain one of the most recognizable landscapes of the Mongolian Gobi. Explore the cliffs on foot and enjoy panoramic views across the surrounding desert. Winter brings a special atmosphere to Bayanzag. With far fewer visitors than during summer, the silence and immense scale of the landscape become part of the experience. Depending on road, weather and local conditions, additional stops may be made to experience everyday Gobi life before returning to comfortable accommodation for the evening.

After breakfast, transfer to Dalanzadgad Airport for the return flight to Ulaanbaatar, subject to the domestic flight schedule. If a suitable flight is unavailable, the return journey will be arranged overland by private vehicle. Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, transfer to your hotel and enjoy some free time in the capital. In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner and celebrate an extraordinary journey through Mongolia’s winter Gobi — from the frozen landscapes of Yolyn Am and the red cliffs of Bayanzag to the camel-herding families and unforgettable atmosphere of the Thousand Camel Festival.

After breakfast, enjoy your final morning in Mongolia before transferring privately to Chinggis Khaan International Airport according to your international flight schedule.
