Khuvsgul Ice Festival & Reindeer Adventure 2027

Journey into Mongolia’s remote winter north on an 8-day expedition combining East Taiga reindeer herders, the Khuvsgul Ice Festival, frozen Lake Khuvsgul and the ancient Uushigiin Uvur Deer Stones.

Khuvsgul

Experience one of Mongolia’s most extraordinary winter journeys, combining the remote East Taiga, traditional reindeer-herding culture and the spectacular Khuvsgul Ice Festival in a single 8-day expedition.

Fly from Ulaanbaatar to Murun when seasonal flights are available and continue deep into northern Mongolia through Ulaan-Uul toward the remote East Taiga. Meet reindeer-herding families in their winter environment and discover their unique relationship with their reindeer, the surrounding taiga and generations of traditional knowledge.

From the Darkhad region, continue to frozen Lake Khuvsgul to experience two days of the famous Khuvsgul Ice Festival. Against a dramatic backdrop of frozen lake, forests and snow-covered mountains, local communities gather for colorful winter celebrations that may include horse-drawn sleigh racing, ice skating, traditional games, cultural performances and ice sculptures.

The journey also includes a visit to Uushigiin Uvur, home to an extraordinary collection of ancient deer stones and archaeological monuments near Murun.

More than an Ice Festival tour, this expedition reveals several completely different sides of northern Mongolia — remote taiga wilderness, living reindeer-herding traditions, ancient history and one of the country’s most remarkable winter celebrations.

Domestic flights are used whenever suitable seasonal schedules are available. When flights are unavailable, comfortable private overland transportation will be arranged.
