Mongolia Tours from Germany 2027–2028: Direct Flights & Travel Guide

All Articles|October 11, 202614 min readBy Batbold Uuganbayar

Thinking about travelling from Germany to Mongolia in 2027 or 2028?

There's a compelling reason to consider this extraordinary destination: you can fly directly from Frankfurt to Ulaanbaatar and find yourself in a country of immense landscapes, ancient nomadic traditions and remarkable outdoor adventures.

Mongolia isn't a destination where the experience is measured by how many attractions you visit in one day. Its greatest rewards often come from travelling slowly: riding through an open valley, walking beside a remote mountain lake, sharing tea with a nomadic family or watching wild horses graze on the steppe.

For travellers departing from Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg or Düsseldorf, this guide covers the essential information for planning a Mongolia holiday: flight connections, visa requirements, suggested routes, seasons, accommodation and tour options.

At Nomadic of the Blue Sky, a locally operated Mongolian travel company established in 2010, we organise private journeys, small-group tours, horseback expeditions and cultural adventures across Mongolia.

1. Getting to Mongolia from Germany: Direct Flights and Connections

One of the biggest advantages for travellers from Germany is the availability of a nonstop connection between Frankfurt and Ulaanbaatar.

Frankfurt to Ulaanbaatar – Direct Flights

MIAT Mongolian Airlines operates flights between Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN), serving Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbaatar.

The nonstop journey generally takes approximately nine hours, depending on the direction of travel and operating conditions.

This makes Frankfurt one of the most convenient European gateways for visiting Mongolia.

The route appears in MIAT's published 2026–early 2027 schedules. Frequencies and departure dates for the remainder of 2027 and 2028 should be reconfirmed before booking.

Check the official airline website:

MIAT Mongolian Airlines – Flights and Timetables

Flying from Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Düsseldorf

If you live outside Frankfurt, there are several ways to plan your trip.

Option 1 – Connect through Frankfurt

Travel from your home city to Frankfurt and continue on the nonstop flight to Ulaanbaatar.

This can be particularly convenient if your domestic or European flight connects comfortably with the MIAT departure.

Option 2 – Connect through Istanbul

Istanbul offers another potential connection to Ulaanbaatar.

This option may be useful if you find a better connection from Berlin, Munich or another German airport.

Option 3 – Travel via another international hub

Depending on airline schedules, connections through Seoul, Beijing or other airports may also be available.

Compare the total travel time, baggage allowance and layover rather than choosing solely on price.

Our Arrival Recommendation

After an international flight, we recommend spending your first night in Ulaanbaatar.

If you arrive early, a relaxed city excursion and lunch can be arranged before checking into your hotel.

If you arrive later in the day, a direct airport transfer and overnight stay are usually the most comfortable choice.

Your main countryside adventure can begin the following morning.

2. Do German Citizens Need a Visa for Mongolia?

German citizens holding ordinary German passports can currently visit Mongolia without a visa for stays of up to 30 days.

This arrangement has been in place since September 2013 and is separate from the temporary visa exemptions introduced for some other European nationalities.

According to the Mongolian Embassy in Berlin, your passport should be valid for at least six months upon entry.

For travel in 2027 or 2028, we still recommend checking the latest immigration requirements shortly before departure.

For longer stays, employment or purposes other than permitted short visits, additional visa arrangements may be necessary.

Travellers residing in Germany but holding passports from other countries should verify the rules applicable to their nationality.

3. Why Mongolia Is Worth the Journey from Germany

Germany has beautiful forests, mountain trails, national parks and well-established outdoor tourism infrastructure.

Mongolia offers something quite different: the opportunity to experience nature on a much larger scale, often far from paved roads, buildings and densely populated areas.

Wilderness Without the Crowds

Imagine spending a day crossing valleys where the nearest settlement may be many kilometres away.

You might encounter herds of horses, a few nomadic families and vast landscapes that seem to continue indefinitely.

This is one of Mongolia's most memorable qualities.

A Living Nomadic Culture

Mongolia's countryside is not simply an outdoor playground. It is also home to herding families who maintain ways of life shaped by animals, seasons and mobility.

Visiting a family ger, learning about traditional livestock herding and observing everyday rural activities can be among the most rewarding parts of a journey.

Travel Beyond the Usual Tourist Routes

Mongolia offers extensive possibilities for horseback expeditions, hiking, wilderness camping, landscape photography and cultural discovery.

Travellers interested in meaningful experiences rather than a conventional resort holiday will find much to explore.

4. The Best Regions of Mongolia for Nature and Adventure

Rather than rushing through every famous destination, consider choosing a region that matches your interests.

Central Mongolia – History, Steppe and Nomadic Life

Central Mongolia combines important historical sites with accessible countryside landscapes.

Highlights include Kharkhorin, the historic capital associated with the Mongol Empire, Erdene Zuu Monastery, the Orkhon Valley and traditional herding communities.

This region is ideal for travellers who want a combination of history, easy walks, cultural experiences and beautiful countryside.

Khan Khentii – Forests, Rivers and Horseback Expeditions

The Khentii Mountains offer a different landscape from the open steppe.

Here, forests, rivers, wetlands and mountain valleys create excellent opportunities for outdoor adventures.

Horseback expeditions can take travellers away from vehicle-accessible roads and into remote wilderness, with local horse teams and nights spent camping.

Lake Khuvsgul – Northern Mongolia's Alpine Landscapes

Lake Khuvsgul is one of Mongolia's great natural attractions.

Surrounded by mountains and forests, the region offers scenic hiking, lake views, cultural encounters and outdoor activities.

For travellers who appreciate mountain and lake environments, Northern Mongolia can be particularly rewarding.

The Gobi Desert – More Than Sand Dunes

The Gobi is much more varied than many first-time visitors imagine.

Its landscapes include rocky mountains, deep valleys, enormous dune systems and colourful cliffs.

Highlights include Yol Valley, the Khongor Sand Dunes and Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs.

The region also provides opportunities to meet camel-herding families and learn about life in Mongolia's dry southern landscapes.

The Altai Mountains – Remote Western Mongolia

Western Mongolia is especially attractive for travellers seeking mountain landscapes, Kazakh culture and eagle-hunting traditions.

The Altai region offers dramatic scenery, photographic opportunities and cultural experiences unlike those found in Central Mongolia.

6. When Is the Best Time to Visit Mongolia from Germany?

Different seasons offer very different travel experiences, so the best month depends on your interests.

May and June – Quieter Travel and Early Summer

Late spring and early summer can be appealing for travellers who prefer fewer visitors and active outdoor experiences.

However, weather can be unpredictable, particularly in the mountains and northern regions.

June is a rewarding time for green landscapes and the start of the main countryside travel season.

July – Naadam and Peak Summer

July is one of the most popular months to visit Mongolia.

The Naadam Festival offers an exceptional introduction to Mongolian sporting and cultural traditions.

This is an excellent time for travellers who want to combine history, nomadic culture and classic countryside experiences.

Accommodation and tour availability should be arranged well in advance.

August – Horseback Riding and Multi-Region Journeys

August is particularly attractive for horseback expeditions, visits to Central Mongolia, hiking and exploring the Gobi.

It is also a suitable period for longer overland adventures.

September – Autumn Landscapes and Photography

September can offer beautiful light, golden grasslands and cooler weather.

For visitors interested in Western Mongolia, it marks the beginning of an especially rewarding period for cultural photography and eagle-hunting traditions.

October – Golden Eagle Festival Season

Early October is associated with important Golden Eagle Festival events.

Autumn temperatures can drop sharply, particularly in the Altai Mountains, so warm clothing is essential.

Winter – A Different Mongolia

Winter travel offers frozen landscapes, snow-covered valleys and remote cultural experiences.

For those interested in winter photography and unusual expeditions, Mongolia has much to offer, but careful preparation is necessary.

7. Slow Travel in Mongolia: Why More Days in Fewer Places Can Be Better

A common mistake when planning a Mongolia holiday is trying to include the Gobi Desert, Lake Khuvsgul, Western Mongolia and Central Mongolia in a very short itinerary.

On a map, these destinations may seem relatively manageable.

In reality, Mongolia is an enormous country, and travelling between regions can involve long driving days, limited flight schedules and changing road conditions.

Instead, consider choosing two complementary regions.

For example, a 12–14 day holiday focused on Central and Northern Mongolia can provide plenty of time for walking, meeting local families, visiting historical sites and enjoying the landscape.

A journey combining the Gobi Desert with Central Mongolia is another rewarding option.

Our advice is simple: allow enough time to enjoy the destination, not just to reach it.

8. What Are Ger Camps, and How Comfortable Are They?

A Mongolian ger is a traditional circular dwelling used by nomadic herding families.

Staying in a ger is often an essential part of experiencing Mongolia.

However, ger accommodation varies considerably.

Standard Tourist Ger Camps

These usually provide beds, basic furnishings and shared washing or bathroom facilities.

They are comfortable enough for many countryside adventures but should not be confused with luxury hotel accommodation.

Deluxe Ger Camps

Selected tourist camps offer upgraded accommodation, sometimes including private bathrooms and additional amenities.

Availability depends on location and season.

Nomadic Family Stays

Staying with local families offers a more traditional experience.

Facilities are generally simple, and travellers should be comfortable with a different standard of accommodation.

Wilderness Camping

For remote horseback or trekking expeditions, tents may be the most practical accommodation.

Camping allows visitors to reach landscapes that cannot be accessed comfortably by vehicle.

Before booking, always check the exact accommodation arrangements described in your itinerary.

9. How Much Does a Mongolia Tour from Germany Cost?

The total cost of a Mongolia holiday depends on flight prices, destinations, duration, tour style, group size and accommodation.

Since there are direct services between Frankfurt and Ulaanbaatar, travellers from Germany have a useful flight option to compare against connecting routes.

Shared Small-Group Tours

Small-group journeys divide vehicle, guide and logistical costs among participants.

They are an attractive option for solo travellers and couples.

Private Tours

Private tours provide greater flexibility in timing, accommodation, activities and travel pace.

They are particularly suitable for photographers, families and travellers with specific interests.

Horseback and Wilderness Expeditions

Specialist expeditions may require local horse teams, camping equipment, support vehicles and additional personnel.

These logistical requirements can influence the final cost.

Tour prices on Journey.mn are generally displayed in US dollars, so travellers paying in euros should consider exchange rates and card charges.

You can compare published itineraries and prices on our Mongolia Tours page.

10. Practical Information for German Travellers

Money and Payments

Mongolia's currency is the Mongolian Tögrög (MNT).

Cards are commonly accepted in Ulaanbaatar, but cash is advisable for rural travel and small purchases.

Language

Mongolian is the official language.

English-speaking guides can be arranged for our tours, and German-speaking guiding services may be requested subject to availability.

Weather and Packing

Mongolia has a strongly continental climate.

Bring clothing that can be layered, a windproof or waterproof outer layer, comfortable footwear and sun protection.

For horseback expeditions, ask about suitable riding boots, helmets and other necessary equipment.

Mobile Internet

Internet and mobile services are available in Ulaanbaatar and many towns.

Coverage can be limited in remote valleys, mountains and desert areas.

Travel Insurance

Choose comprehensive insurance that covers your planned activities, including horseback riding or trekking if applicable.

Emergency medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended for remote expeditions.

Time Difference

Ulaanbaatar operates on UTC+8.

Mongolia is seven hours ahead of Germany during Central European Time in winter and six hours ahead during Central European Summer Time.

Responsible Cultural Travel

Always ask permission before photographing people, especially inside family homes.

Respect local customs, avoid leaving waste in natural areas and follow your guide's advice during visits to nomadic communities.

11. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Fly Directly from Frankfurt to Mongolia?

Yes. MIAT Mongolian Airlines operates a Frankfurt–Ulaanbaatar route. Check the airline's published timetable for your intended 2027 or 2028 travel dates.

Do German Citizens Need a Visa for Mongolia?

German citizens can currently visit Mongolia visa-free for up to 30 days, subject to passport validity and the applicable entry conditions.

Is Mongolia Suitable for Hiking and Trekking?

Yes. Mongolia offers excellent hiking and trekking opportunities in regions such as Khentii, Khuvsgul and the Altai Mountains.

The level of difficulty varies considerably depending on the route and terrain.

Do I Need Horse Riding Experience?

Not for every horseback activity. Short, guided experiences can be suitable for beginners, while multi-day expeditions require a more careful assessment of riding ability and physical fitness.

Can I Arrange a German-Speaking Guide?

German-speaking guides may be available on request, depending on dates and destination. Please enquire in advance rather than assuming availability.

Is Mongolia Suitable for Travellers Over 60?

Yes. Many cultural and scenic tours can be adapted to a comfortable pace. Suitability depends more on fitness, mobility, road conditions and the chosen itinerary than age alone.

How Many Days Should I Spend in Mongolia?

For a first visit, 10–14 days is an excellent starting point. Longer journeys allow more time for remote regions, trekking and multi-day horseback expeditions.

Can I Visit Mongolia Independently?

Independent travel is possible, but remote areas can be challenging due to limited infrastructure, variable roads and language barriers.

A knowledgeable local guide and experienced driver can make countryside travel more comfortable and rewarding.
